Commercial Auto Tips and Tricks

If you're a business owner than you almost certainly have a business use vehicle. Sometimes it's basic, no employees, no deliveries, no towing trailers, no heavy vehicles. Other times it's more complicated. Commercial auto is unique and although it is regulated by the government it doesn't mean it is the same for everyone. Here are some things to consider when looking at your commercial auto policy. Remember, you should always consult your licensed insurance representative for recommendations as to what is best for you and your business.

  1. If you have employees, or will be hiring employees be prepared to provide their driving information as that will likely need to be added (and rated for) on your policy. It is a good practice to get this info up front when hiring because sometimes an employee may not be eligible to drive your vehicle with your current insurer. If this is the case you are likely going to be spending more on premium.

  2. If your operations include deliveries be prepared to pay more for your insurance. Make sure your business policy has the appropriate coverages for products while in transit.

  3. If your business has five or more business use vehicles, most insurers will offer a Fleet policy. This is generally a more cost effective way to insure your commercial vehicles and there is more pricing flexibility. Speak with your insurance representative if you think you qualify or give MR Insured a call.

  4. If your business operations include driving your clients vehicles, you may be required to have a Garage Auto insurance policy. This provides specific coverages for vehicles that you do not own, but are in your care, custody and control.

  5. Insuring both your business and auto with the same insurer should provide you with some additional discounts.
